Self-protection of medical workers in ophthalmology clinic during COVID-19 epidemic
Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by a coronavirus called SARS Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). It has been observed that COVID-19 mainly spreads via respiratory tract, contact and digestive tract. Due to the particularity of profession, ophthalmic medical workers need to be in close contact with patients, so they have a higher risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection. In this paper, therefore, the self-protection of medical workers in ophthalmology clinic during COVID-19 epidemic...

Awake laparotomy: is locoregional anesthesia a functional option for major abdominal surgeries in the COVID-19 era?
OBJECTIVE: Over the ongoing pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), the demand for critical care beds among medical services has rapidly exceeded its supply. Elective surgery has comprehensively been drastically limited and allocating intensive care beds to emergency cases or to high risk scheduled elective cases has become an even more difficult task. Here we present our experience which could help to handle undelayable surgical procedures during this emergency. PATIENTS AND METHODS: In...

Assumptions for disparities in case-fatality rates of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) across the globe
In a short span, Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has become the world pandemic by rapidly spreading almost to all the countries around the globe, irrespective of the continent, population size, economic status and healthcare system. Despite the number of cases increasing exponentially in most of the countries, there exist certain disparities in terms of case-fatality rates. As of April 24, 2020, the case-fatality rate of COVID-19 is about 7.0%, with 193,671 deaths and 2,761,121 confirmed cases around...

SARS-CoV-2 identification in lungs, heart and kidney specimens by transmission and scanning electron microscopy
From two COVID-19-related deaths, samples of lung, heart and kidney were collected and processed for Transmission and Scanning Electron Microscopy (TEM and SEM) with the aim of identifying the virus. Virions of SARS-CoV-2 were found in all tissues by TEM and SEM, corroborating the hypothesis that the virus enters the cells of different organs. This is the first report identifying SARS-CoV-2 in different human tissues by TEM and SEM. L'articolo SARS-CoV-2 identification in lungs, heart and kidney...

Measuring knowledge, attitudes and behavior of nurses in medication management: cross-cultural comparisons in Italy and Malta
OBJECTIVE: Medication errors are one of the most common causes of negative events affecting patient safety all over the world.  Scientific literature divides the factors that contribute to the occurrence of harmful events into factors related to the characteristics of the healthcare workers and factors related to the organization of the drug management process. The aim of the study was to examine the knowledge, attitudes and behaviours related to medication errors among Italian and Maltese nurses....

Internet+ and COVID-19 – A short report
OBJECTIVE: COVID-19 broke out in China at the end of 2019 and spread rapidly around the world. The World Health Organization designated COVID-19 as a global pandemic on March 11, 2020. China has adopted its own country-specific comprehensive prevention and control measures, and, as a result, the domestic COVID-19 epidemic became effectively controlled in China in mid-March 2020. During the COVID-19 epidemic, remarkable changes have taken place in China’s domestic learning, living, and working methods,...

Association between painful temporomandibular disorders and sleep quality: A systematic review
Abstract Background This review aimed to systematically evaluate the association between painful temporomandibular disorders (TMD), and sleep quality in adults. Methods Observational case/control studies using either RDC/TMD or DC/TMD for TMD diagnostic and validated questionnaires for sleep quality were selected by two reviewers in a two‐phase process. A systematic review was conducted in accordance with the PRISMA statement. The search was performed in PubMed/Medline, LILACS, SCOPUS,...

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to explore the effect of micro ribonucleic acid (miR)-210 on neuronal apoptosis in rats with cerebral infarction (CI) by regulating the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)-Notch signaling pathway. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 30 clean healthy male Sprague-Dawley rats weighing 200-300 g were selected and randomly divided into Sham group (n=10), CI model group (CIM group, n=10), and CIM + miR-210 Mimic group (n=10). The prevalence of excessive sleepiness is higher in shift workers than in patients with obstructive sleep apnea
Abstract Excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) is a common feature among shift workers as well as in obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) patients. There are several important accidents related to sleep disturbances causing EDS. The aim of this study was to evaluate EDS in a group of shift workers (regular rotating) from civil aviation and to compare them with OSA patients (n = 300) and with a group of regular workers (RW) (n = 140). Our sample was composed of 730 working‐age individuals (aged 18–67 years)....

Obesity, bariatric surgery and periodontal disease: a literature update
Obesity is linked to other systemic diseases, such as diabetes mellitus, dyslipidemia, and arterial hypertension. These comorbidities increase the risk of developing cardiovascular disease risk. Adipose tissue is a true endocrine organ and releases various pro-inflammatory cytokines. Periodontal disease (PD) is a chronic inflammatory disorder of the gingiva and bone support (periodontal tissues) that surrounds the teeth. The relationship between obesity and an increased risk of developing PD is already...

Prevention of liver metastases through perioperative acute CpG-C immune stimulation
Abstract Following excision of colorectal tumors, metastatic disease is prevalent, primarily occurs in the liver, and is highly predictive of poor prognosis. The perioperative period is now recognized as critical in determining the incidence of postoperative metastases and long-term cancer outcomes. Thus, various perioperative prophylactic interventions are currently studied during this time frame. However, immune stimulation during the perioperative period has rarely been attempted...

Respiratory Muscle and Lung Function in Lung Allograft Recipients: Association with Exercise Intolerance
Background: In lung transplant recipients (LTRs), restrictive ventilation disorder may be present due to respiratory muscle dysfunction that may reduce exercise capacity. This might be mediated by pro-inflammatory cytokines such as tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and interleukin-6 (IL-6). Objective: We investigated lung respiratory muscle function as well as circulating pro-inflammatory cytokines and exercise capacity in LTRs. Methods: Fifteen LTRs (6 female, age 56 ± 14 years, 63 ± 45 months post-transplantation)...

Interaction among morphological, trophic and genetic groups in the rapidly radiating Salvelinus fishes from Lake Kronotskoe
Abstract Adaptive radiation in fishes entering novel post-glacial lakes ubiquitously gives rise to a set of typical forms specializing under the pressure of the same ecological gradients. The world’s most diverse flock of salmonids from Lake Kronotskoe (Kamchatka, N-E Asia) serves as a good model to study evolutionary divergence modes. Eight forms with different feeding types and habitat preferences are known to originate from Salvelinus malma. To determine the phasing of the...

The Analysis of PTPN6 for Bladder Cancer: An Exploratory Study Based on TCGA
PTPN6 (protein tyrosine phosphatase nonreceptor type 6), a tyrosine phosphatase, is known to be signaling molecules that regulate a variety of cellular processes including cell growth, differentiation, mitotic cycle, and oncogenic transformation. Previous studies have demonstrated that PTPN6 expression is relatively elevated in several malignancies. However, the role of PTPN6 in bladder cancer (BC) remains unclear. The purpose of this study was to explore the prognostic value of PTPN6 in BC. RNA-seq...
