להוציא את המיץ – פועלי סחיטה בעברית

סְחִיטָה הפועל סָחַט הוא הרווח בימינו לתיאור הוצאת נוזל מדבר מה שהוא אצור בתוכו. בלשון המקרא הוא מופיע פעם אחת – בשורש שׂח"ט (כלומר בשי"ן שמאלית): "וָאֶקַּח אֶת הָעֲנָבִים וָאֶשְׂחַט אֹתָם אֶל כּוֹס פַּרְעֹה" (בראשית מ, יא). כדרכם של שורשים מקראיים רבים גם במקרה זה נתחלפה השׂי"ן בסמ"ך במעבר ללשון חכמים, ומכאן ואילך רגיל השורש סח"ט: "הסוחט זיתים על בשרו פטור" (מעשרות ד, א), "אין סוחטין את הפירות להוציא מהן משקין" (שבת כב, א). פעולת הסחיטה אינה ייחודית לפירות. היא עשויה לשמש בהקשרים אחרים של אוכל:...

מצאנו בארכיון שלנו מסמך יפה ומרגש: "קול קורא מירושלים עיר השלום לקהלות ישראל, בתי כנסיות, רבנים, ראשי־עם ולכל אחינו בני ישראל בארץ הקודש ובתפוצות הגולה". הקול הקורא פורסם בט"ו בשבט תרצ"ה (19 בינואר 1935) בעברית ובאנגלית. הכותב מפציר ביהודי העולם "לשוב ולהזכיר בכל ברכותינו את המושג אשר היה יקר מכל יקר בעמנו בכל הדורות – הוא מושג השלום", וממליץ "להנהיג מילה זו בתור ברכה בפגוש יהודי את רעהו ובהיפרדו ממנו". מחבר הקריאה סבור כי "על פי אמרת שלום זו יכירו וידעו זה את זה כל שבעה עשר מיליון היהודים שבעולם"....
