Extinction of eastern Sahul megafauna coincides with sustained environmental deterioration
Nature Communications, Published online: 18 May 2020; doi:10.1038/s41467-020-15785-wThe causes of the Upper Pleistocene megafauna extinction in Australia and New Guinea are debated, but fossil data are lacking for much of this region. Here, Hocknull and colleagues report a new, diverse megafauna assemblage from north-eastern Australia that persisted until ~40,000 years ago.

Exposure to UV radiance predicts repeated evolution of concealed black skin in birds
Nature Communications, Published online: 15 May 2020; doi:10.1038/s41467-020-15894-6In contrast to bird plumage, little is known about the evolution of bird skin color. Here, Nicolaï et al. find that black skin has evolved over 100 times in birds and is associated with baldness and/or white feathers as well as with high irradiation habitats, suggesting a role in UV protection.

Patterns and driving forces of dimensionality-dependent charge density waves in 2H-type transition metal dichalcogenides
Nature Communications, Published online: 15 May 2020; doi:10.1038/s41467-020-15715-wThe dimensional dependence of charge density wave (CDW) in two-dimensional dichalcogenides remains puzzled. Here, Lin et al. study trends of CDW ordering in an isoelectronic group of materials 2H-MX2 and provide a unified understanding involving several microscopic factors.

A role for actin flexibility in thin filament-mediated contractile regulation and myopathy
Nature Communications, Published online: 15 May 2020; doi:10.1038/s41467-020-15922-5The α-cardiac actin M305L hypertrophic cardiomyopathy-causing mutation is located near residues that help confine tropomyosin to an inhibitory position along thin filaments. Here the authors assessed M305L actin in vivo, in vitro, and in silico to characterize emergent pathological properties and define the mechanistic basis of disease.

Hydrodynamic slip can align thin nanoplatelets in shear flow
Nature Communications, Published online: 15 May 2020; doi:10.1038/s41467-020-15939-wCurrent theories predict that a plate-like particle rotates continuously in a shear flow. Kamal et al. instead show that even nanometric hydrodynamic slip may induce a thin plate-like particle to adopt a stable orientation, and discuss implications of this effect for flow processing of 2D nanomaterials.

DNA polymerase ε relies on a unique domain for efficient replisome assembly and strand synthesis
Nature Communications, Published online: 15 May 2020; doi:10.1038/s41467-020-16095-xDNA polymerase epsilon (Pol ε) synthesizes half of the genome in every cell cycle. Here the authors uncover a dual role of a unique domain within the Pol ε catalytic core in replisome assembly and DNA synthesis and the impact of this domain on genome stability.

Integrating molecular markers into metabolic models improves genomic selection for Arabidopsis growth
Nature Communications, Published online: 15 May 2020; doi:10.1038/s41467-020-16279-5An increase in genomic selection (GS) accuracy can accelerate genetic gain by shortening the breeding cycles. Here, the authors introduce a network-based GS method that uses metabolic models and improves the prediction accuracy of Arabidopsis growth within and across environments.

Targeting lysyl oxidase (LOX) overcomes chemotherapy resistance in triple negative breast cancer
Nature Communications, Published online: 15 May 2020; doi:10.1038/s41467-020-16199-4The development of chemoresistance is a major hurdle in triple negative breast cancer (TNBC). Here, the authors show that lysyl oxidase (LOX) is overexpressed in chemoresistant TNBCs, and when inhibited reduces collagen cross-linking, fibronectin fibril assembly, and downstream integrin signalling, overcoming resistance.
