Post‐discharge opioid prescribing after laparoscopic appendicectomy and cholecystectomy
Opioid over‐prescription, following surgery, is a significant public health issue in most developed countries. This study demonstrates a lower rate of opiate prescription on discharge for laparoscopic cholecystectomy and laparoscopic appendicectomy in an Australian setting when compared to US data. The urgency of the procedures and the experience of the prescriber also had an impact on opioid prescriptions. Increasing experience of the prescribing doctor appears to be correlated to decreased amounts...

Triterpenoid CDDO-Me induces ROS generation and up-regulates cellular levels of antioxidative enzymes without induction of DSBs in human peripheral blood mononuclear cells
Abstract Ionizing radiation produces reactive oxygen species (ROS) leading to cellular DNA damage. Therefore, patients undergoing radiation therapy or first responders in radiological accident scenarios could both benefit from the identification of specifically acting pharmacological radiomitigators. The synthetic triterpenoid bardoxolone-methyl (CDDO-Me) has previously been shown to exert antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anticancer activities in several cell lines, in part by...

Reliable cerebrospinal fluid cytology reporting over an extended period: Is it possible by adding formol saline and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid as cell preservative?
Abstract Background Reporting cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) cytology within a narrow time frame is crucial as it is often indicated in critically ill patients and moreover, the cells in CSF are highly labile and tend to decline rapidly on standing. However, due to various logistic issues, delay in reporting is inevitable at times, especially if ancillary tools are required. In this study, we examine the effect of using formol saline and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) as a preservative on...

Mediastinal ganglioneuroma diagnosed by transesophageal endoscopic ultrasound guided fine needle aspiration (EUS‐FNA)
Abstract Ganglioneuromas are rare benign tumors that arise from the sympathetic nerve fibers and represent the final maturation stage of neuroblast tumors. The most common sites of involvement in the body include posterior mediastinum, followed by retroperitoneum, adrenal gland, and soft tissues of the head and neck. In the mediastinum, this tumor is most frequently located in posterior compartment, together with other neurogenic tumors. The reports of mediastinal ganglioneuroma diagnosed by fine...

Nothing to Sneeze at: Histamine and Histamine Receptors in Oral Carcinogenesis
Abstract Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC), the most common oral malignancy, shows an increasing rate of incidence worldwide. In spite of the recent advances in cancer research, OSCC therapy continues to have unfavourable outcomes, and thus patient’s prognosis remains relatively poor. Current research has been devoted to identifying novel therapeutic targets also in the tumour microenvironment (TME). Histamine and its G‐protein coupled receptors (H1R‐H4R) play vital roles in multiple cancer‐associated...
